Having just returned from a trip to West Africa, today’s inauguration was especially poignant to me. During my visit last week to Ghana I toured a 16th century slave castle in Cape Coast. My tour of the site took me through vaulted dungeons where it is speculated that hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of native Africans were held prior to their final trip through the ‘door of no return’ on the way to a new and brutal world. Through that door they went bringing stinging fear, intense loss and the cherished traditions of their homeland.
I can’t help but hope that with the new administration we can all pass through a different 'door of no return' to a new era in global politics.
So in the words of our new president “with eyes fixed on the horizon and God's grace upon us, [let us carry] forth that great gift of freedom and deliver it safely to future generations.”
